Hi, my name is Francis Bagley. I made the sculpture titled Shrug, which is located on the ground floor of The Lancaster Hotel. Shrug is a sculpture that is made of three different metals. The shoulders are made of cast bronze, the torso is made of powder-coated aluminum, and the legs, or stand, is made of powder-coated steel. I work primarily as a sculptor and began making sculpture over 30 years ago after having begun my artistic career as a painter. But when painting, I began to realize that my imagination was functioning in actual three-dimensional physical space rather than in the two-dimensional picture plane. So consequently, I was always thinking about how to bring the imagery I was painting into real physical space. Finally, I dove into sculpture, and it pretty much stayed in that dimension ever since. As a sculptor, I often work with the human form, although not exclusively. The organic quality of the human figure holds my interest because of the subconscious empathy we human beings have toward a form similar to our own bodies. Shrug is an abstracted figure that suggests most of the body and only articulates the shoulders. By the way, I live and work in Dallas.
